Common Hormone Evaluation Questions
What is BHRT?
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is the use of hormones made from plant-based sources to identically match human hormones.
What hormones are used?
The most commonly used hormones for BHRT are testosterone, a form of estrogen, and progesterone. Testosterone is used in both men and women.
Do I have bloodwork done before each treatment?
Bloodwork is required before the first treatment and six weeks later to determine your dosing, then annually thereafter.
What are the pellets made from?
The pellets are derived from yams. Yams have the highest concentration of hormones. They are all natural and bio-identical, meaning they are the exact replication of what the body makes. There are no known allergens associated with yams.
How long will the treatments last?
Bio-identical hormone pellets last 3-4 months for women and 5-6 months for men. The absorption rate is based on cardiac output.
How is it administered?
The small hormone pellets are typically placed in the hip under a mild, local anesthetic. The procedure takes less than give minutes.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects for women and men are rare. In women, transient breast tenderness lasting 7-10 days may occur with the first insertion. There may be some hair growth or acne in moderation from occurrences from testosterone therapy. Men side effects may include decreased sperm count, decreased testicular mass and possible prostate enlargement. These side effects occur much more frequently with the use of synthetic hormone replacement therapy.
What if I'm already on hormone creams, patches, or injections?
This is an easy transition. Your certified treatment specialist will customize a treatment plan to convert from your current method of hormone replacement to the bio-identical pellet therapy.
What about breast cancer?
Breast cancer survivors and/or those who have a history of breast cancer in their family may still be a candidate for hormone replacement therapy. Your provider will discuss the options during your consultation
Why Does Your Testosterone Decrease?
Testosterone is a very important hormone that helps men regulate sex drive, bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, and strength.
Testosterone levels are known to decline with age, but there are other factors that impact your Testosterone levels such as environment and lifestyle.
In the U.S. alone, it’s estimated that up to 13 Million adult men have Low Testosterone. That’s approximately 25% of all men in this country.
How Testosterone affect Men?
-
Low Energy: Prolonged, continuous fatigue is not normal at any age and can have a significant effect on your work performance, health, and your attitude.
-
Declining Libido: If your testosterone levels fall below the normal range, you may experience a decrease in libido. Here's the good news: This is a temporary condition that we can easily treat and reverse.
-
Erectile Dysfunction: Low-t can cause erectile dysfunction in men, making your most intimate moments frustrating.
-
Muscle Loss: Testosterone is key for building muscle, so when testosterone levels dip, you can lose muscle mass. Because of low testosterone, it’s easier for men to gain fat.
-
Low Concentration: Testosterone has a significant effect on your physiological processes, including focus, clarity, and memory. Low T may give you trouble concentrating.
-
Depression: Low testosterone can cause mood swings. Additionally, one study shows that men with depression are more likely to have low testosterone.
